Project Based Learning

In our group, we chose Mental Health as our topic. We chose this because we felt like it's a really big concern in our community. We hold a Social Hangout at school to make friends to our schoolmates because loneliness is one of the roots of depression. For our actions, I felt that we succeeded in our action because first, we made friends and we made awareness by posting posters and handing flyers, and we work as a group so hard.

Did we achieve our goals? Yes. Because we made our plans, we prepared for it. Most importantly we made an awareness in our school community that suicide and depression are happening everywhere.

My personal action was;
playing Jenga and talking with those people who came to our hangout so they feel welcome.
Making posters and flyers to post around the school.
Lastly, being a friendly human being around the school.

Next time we're lucky enough to do PBL again next year, I'd like to choose a different topic to learn new things and to help other people too. Choose a different people to work with, I mean I love my current group but I'd like to work with other people with the same thinking as me.

Walking in Straight Lines

Aim: Is to walk in straight lines without any of our senses

Hypothesis: My prediction is we can't walk in straight lines, but on the other hand, we can if we have strategies

Equipment:
1. Blindfold to stop us from seeing our surrondings.
2. Bucket
3. Cotton balls to stop us from smelling.

Results:
I almost finished the race. I walked straight for like 3 minutes, and after 5 minutes I still felt I'm walking straight then, I kind of went to the right side.

Second Action Plan

First of all, what is our goal for handing flyers and posting posters?
I made this flyers using a free poster creator
This is me handing flyers

Our goal is to raise awareness to students to tell them that it's happening every minute and every second because some people think that being not okay is okay. I notice at school that if we're talking about depression or suicide some people just say their opinion without thinking the consequences of it and they might not notice in their class that someone is hurting inside. We met other students and they said that they're really interested in our topic. They even wish us good luck and said "We hope that you guys will make a change in our school community." and that gave me the hope and enthusiasm to finish our work.

The outcome of our action was actually really good. One of the enablers of our action was ourselves and our form teacher, Miss Handley. She supported us throughout the week. She printed and photocopied our posters. On the other hand, if there are enablers, there are also disablers. Our biggest enemies in this action are those students who're ripping our posters. We don't know to be exactly why they do those things and this is the problem in our school community, instead of supporting each other, the opposite thing happens.

"Never give up on some who has
mental health. When I is replaced
by We, illness becomes wellness."

Project Based Learning 2017

These are the action plans we've been created for the past few days. Hopefully, these action plans can prevent or. Our aim is we want to make an impact on our school community by creating a hangout place where students from year 7-10 can play together or can talk about their problems without hesitation. We want to bring Hornby closer together. Because I noticed that at school, most students have their own group of friends which causes emotional impacts for those students who don't have their 'group of friends', or they might feel left out. And this cause mental illness, depression to be exact. There would be times that they don't want to go to school anymore.

 Action Plan #1
Steps needed to achieve the goal.
What will help us achieve this goal?(Enablers)
Possible barriers and how they could be overcome.
Who is responsible for this step?
Date this step will be achieved by.
Make positive posters and flyers.
Our creativity and by asking the office if we can post posters in hallways, tuckshop, etc.
Then hand flyers to students.
Office not allowing us to post posters. No free time. No budget.

Project Based Learning 2017

"There's H.O.P.E."

First of all, I'd like to thank Mr. Wilson and Mr. Aitken for giving us the opportunity to make a difference in our community.

On Monday, we started PBL. In PBL, were formed into groups with 3-4 members. Our teachers gave us an opportunity to choose who do we like to work with, and I chose Lovely and Wardah.  My group, HOPE chose mental health as our topic. We did some intensive research about it because this topic is a serious topic.

Here are the websites we've accessed for the past few days; and suicide statistics are shocking

Additional links

Then, we need to answer these questions;
Who is affected?
- Groups and Individuals like Adults, Millennials, Teens.
What is the issue?
- Suicide rates are dramatically rising, Wrong understanding about Mental Health, Lacking professional help, Issues that costs depression like homelessness, inequality, etc.
When and how did it start?
-  It's happening for a long time but for the past 7 years, It's dramatically rising. It started in the year 1930's 'Great Depression' which caused mass unemployment in New Zealand.
Where is it happening?
- It happens all over the world, not just in Christchurch or New Zealand. But Christchurch statistics on suicide rates are dramatically rising.
Why is this happening?
- Depression is the outcome of other issues like poverty, homelessness, inequality, etc.

We've done the research and our desire to change in our community, now what is our plan?
We want to make a positive impact in our community by raising awareness like making posters and flyers and form a group where they can talk about their problems without judging them.

Silent Writing for 10 minutes

PBL Reflection

Starting the week with PBL is fun and interesting. We started the day with an assembly in the AV room and Mr Wilson explained what are the things we need to focus on. Doing PBL is take-a-risk on teachers and students. My group chose mental health as our topic. Our goal in this PBL is how to make a positive impact on the community, not just for Hornby but also for the whole world cause for us, being a student/teen will not stop us for helping the community. As of now, PBL is going really well with my group and I hope we are going to succeed.

Antarctica Research

In Social Studies we've done a lot of research in the past few days. We, Staunch Girls which includes the 3 of us. We're researching about Jobs in Antarctica. The strength of our group is the way we're preparing and planning our work. We did planning like questions. But personally, my weakness is not doing some work when I have free time, like during the weekends.

How To Act

How To Act

"Into the woods"

To prepare the role, the actor must give some time to read and comprehend the character's line like the way how they talk, the characters body language and lastly, It's appearance. The objective of these characters (The Baker and The Baker's Wife) are some things that the witch wants too. The Witch makes a deal to lift the evil spell she placed on the Baker's household if they collect the items to help restore her beauty. In the movie both of them are mostly scared because of the witch.

Characteristic of My Character

She's a girl, a 15-year-old high school girl to be exact. In the monologue, the character is turning 16 tomorrow and she wants to borrow her Dad's car to pick up her 'cool friends'. At first, her Dad's not letting her borrow the car, but in the end, her Dad can't stop her because she's kind of a spoiled brat daughter. The character wants to look cool with her friends.

Drama Monologue

I chose this script because I think this monologue is pretty fit for me as a 14-year-old High School.

A young actress auditioning for her school requested a monologue for a 15-year-old.  With that broad request, I decided to make the piece about being not quite old enough to drive.
A comedic female monologue created by Gabriel Davis

"Dad, you will let me take the car myself.  I’m going to be 16 in two weeks.  Yeah, technically my learner’s permit requires you in the car with me … technically I have to wait two weeks to get my license ….

But you know I can drive, you told me I’m better than mom.  I can three point turn, parallel park, and I observe the traffic laws like a religion.  So it’s not like irresponsible to let me drive, because you know I’m awesome at it.

GOD!   This is so unfair.   I hate you!   You’re going to ruin me socially.

The coolest girls in freshman year, the ones whose parents are all probably making huge donations at mom’s gala tonight, who live in the massive houses on the hill and won’t talk to me.  They started talking to me. Because they needed a ride to the dance.   And I’m like, I can take you.   And they’re like, “you’re 16?” and I’m all “yeah.” And then they said, “cool.”  And I’ve been eating lunch with them every day this week, and they’re all so excited.

It was well thought out.  You and mom were supposed to be at her benefit gala thing tonight … you weren’t supposed to have a stupid fever and be stuck at home. If I let them down…  If I don’t get in that car right now and go pick them up and take them to the dance  … I’m dead or I might as well be.   They will make it their life’s work to ruin me.  I will be marked, mocked, and probably shunned.  My entire high school experience will become hell.

I’m not being dramatic.  I’m being accurate, dad.  This is how things go.

So I’m begging you … just …. Just go to sleep.   You have a fever you know.    You need your rest.  Just, go to sleep now and I’ll… I’ll still be here when you wake up in exactly 3 hours.  Right before mom gets back.

Please, Dad. My life depends on it."

Maori Performing Arts

12 / 9 / 17
Alyana and Danielle

In Maori Performing Arts is the combination of Maori culture and performing. One of them is the Haka: war chants. I find the Haka very unique and fascinating. The Haka is an ancient posture dance of the Maori culture that was traditionally used to prepare a war battle.

Spring is in the air.
The sun is shining bright.
Spring is my favourite season of the year.

Poets

Joanna Preston

Joanna Preston was born in Sydney Australia but immigrated to New Zealand in 1994. Joanna joined the Airing Cupboard Women Poet group in 1998 and began writing poets seriously. Joanna is a freelance poet, so she doesn't have exact topics when it comes to writing poems.

Poems from her book 'The Summer King'
Daybreak
From my bed on the back verandah
white-stippled paddocks reach
all the way to the mountains.
Frost has etched the lines
of cobwebs into the brittle air.

The sway-backed mare drowses
surrounded by wraiths of breath,
each long eyelash tipped
with a bead of moisture –
its own sliver of sun.

A kookaburra scrapes his beak
along the low branch
of the old persimmon. Soon
he will throttle the stillness,
and thaw this silver morning.
(The reason why I like this poem because the way she describes simple things turns out so beautiful)

The Pride of Lions
But before we could marry, he became a lion –
thick pelted, and rich with the musk of beast.

The switch to all fours was not easy – all his weight
slung from the blades of his shoulders.
His deltoids knotted like teak burls,
and I burnished them as he slept.

Burrs matted his mane, and for days
he wouldn’t let me groom him –
slapped me away with a suede paw,
snarled against my throat.

He would not eat fruit, or drink milk,
but tore meat from the bones I provided.

His claws caught in the carpet,
so I stripped the rugs from the floor
and polished the boards until they gleamed
and rang with the chime of his nails.

I stroke his saffron hide
and tangle my fingers deep in his ruff,
draw him up around me, ardent
as the gleam of his topaz eyes

– the hypnotic lash of his tail,
the rasp of his tongue on my thighs.
(I don't like this poem that much compared to the other one, but it's still beautiful and still an art.)

Cries of a Broken Heart

When my old self died,
and the tears I cried have dried.
I'm tired of everything worth existing.
Living a beautiful lie that turns out to be full of pain.
And there seems to be no rainbow after the howling rain.

I know I've lived in a world full of lies.
In a kingdom of unheard cries.
I'm the Princess trapped in the cursed castle.
No way to escape, but to jump from the tower.

Living or dying means no difference,
Feels like I've died a million times,
and to die a thousand more.
I could've just ended the sufferings,

I'll go to a different kingdom.
Where I'm the Queen and there's no King.
It should've been you, but you left me hanging.

I knew it right away,
Just like them, you'll leave and never stay.
I just wanted to say I'm okay.
But deep inside, I am not okay.

Art Nouveau is a really cool art form too because it requires a lot of details. Art Nouveau was popular back in 1890 and 1910.
